Welcoming John, to the Flight Digital team.
John joined the Flight Digital team mid-way through 2020 and hasn’t looked back since. John hails all the way from Glasgow, Scotland and brings a plethora of knowledge. With over 8 years of digital experience, John has a great lens on quality work.
John was previously employed at Dept which is a digital agency group with offices all over the globe. He worked on large web and application builds managing multi-disciplined teams and was involved in the coordination of team members for UX, digital design, development, QA and marketing.
Originally moving to Queenstown and then finally to Auckland once Covid-19 set everyone back, John has now found his home. He is excited for the year ahead and the challenging but rewarding projects that come with it.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT WORKING AT FLIGHT AND WHY?
There’s a lot to enjoy about working at Flight. The team is very supportive and we’ve got a togetherness which really helps when managing different projects. Overall though, my favourite part about working for Flight would need to be the unlimited supply of oats, almond milk and natural seed mix that I take advantage of every day.
WHAT CAN WE FIND YOU DOING OUTSIDE OF WORK?
Most people think that because I’m Scottish I would spend my free time getting drunk, eating deep fried mars bars and playing the bagpipes, and only some of these are true! Apart from those classic pastimes, I also like reading, running and hiking.
WHICH PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
Out of the projects I’ve worked on at Flight, the best would probably be the new recipes.co.nz website which will be launching soon! Mostly as it was a challenging timeline and we had a big team working on it. The tech is also really cool so it will be great to see it live. Every project has its own challenges and rewards though, so they’re all good in their own ways.
IS THERE ANYONE IN PARTICULAR WHO INSPIRES YOU?
Most days I like to listen to comedy when I’m working, some favourites being Karl Pilkington, Limmy and Alan Partridge, so I suppose I would count those as inspirations as they help me concentrate at work and get the job done!
DO YOU HAVE ANY SCOTTISH TRADITIONS THAT YOU STILL CARRY OUT HERE IN NZ?
A nice whisky still hits the spot, though that seems to be just as popular in NZ anyway. I’ve definitely attempted to teach people how to do a ceilidh dance after having a few drinks but somehow I always forget the moves. Unfortunately I haven’t managed to find any haggis since I’ve arrived in NZ, so no Burns suppers yet. Irn Bru isn’t quite as ubiquitous either. Being in NZ is doing wonders for my health!
HOW DO YOU THINK 2021 WILL COMPARE TO LAST YEAR?
Well 2020 wasn’t ideal from a global perspective, so hopefully 2021 will compare favourably. In terms of Flight, the aim is to keep improving our processes and output, which can only be good for the team and the value we’re able to offer our clients. Hopefully that also means more exciting projects and continued growth of the team!
